How to source suppliers for your small business

By: Luke

Dashes Graphic

Are you on a mission to only buy British? Or perhaps you only want to work with other ethical suppliers and businesses like yours? Finding the right people to partner up with is crucial for a small business or independent brand. Whether you’re on the hunt for funky fabric or need tote bags and t shirts for a trade fair, here’s how you can build your very own dream team.

Buying British the easy way

With so many directories and membership organisations, it’s never been easier to source products from dear old Blighty. Any good supplier should be able to tell you exactly where all their products are made (and how) but if you aren’t sure, you can take a look at:

  • Let’s Buy British
  • Made in Britain
  • Make it British
  • Love UK Handmade

And if you want to buy local, make sure you check local sources such as business networks, local papers and networking organisations.

Often the best way to get to the nitty gritty is to arrange a phone call or meeting with a British/local supplier to really build that trust and long term relationship. At GB Labels, we love to have a natter with prospective customers and are super-proud to discuss where our products are made and where we’re based.

Supporting makers everywhere

Organisations such as Not on the High Street, Just a Card and Small Business Saturday have made shopping small a breeze. They’re also great online destinations for things like fabric, event supplies and packaging.

If you really want to support other small businesses, don’t forget to ask around. If you’re desperate for recommendations, it’s best to head to Instagram. Either ask on your Instagram Stories or follow accounts such as Hey There Maker and see what other businesses are saying.

And don’t forget to get out there and speak to other makers. Don’t be afraid to ask where they got something or where they sourced a certain element of their product – makers are mega friendly and prefer collaboration over competition any day!

Not sure where to start? The Mama Meet and Market events (organised by ‘shop small’ advocate Ainsley Gray) are a fabulous place to build friendships with other brands like yours.
