Spotlight on British brands: Lisa Lyons Bridal

At GB Labels, we love championing unique design, from designer dog beds to weird and wonderful woollen creations. One area of fashion design differs greatly from high street style – bridalwear. Creating one special dress for a bride’s big day can be a challenging and deeply personal journey for any designer to undertake. After we delved into bridalwear’s past in our History of Fashion blog, we wanted to find out more about this creative journey. We chatted to designer Lisa, from Lisa Lyons Bridal, to get more insight into this fascinating world.
 

Bridalwear is such a unique area of design – what first drew you to designing wedding dresses?

I have always worked in the fashion industry – I worked for many years for brands that were known for embellished eveningwear and bridesmaid dresses, and I’m passionate about being part of the creative process.

Then I got married myself and I really enjoyed designing and making my own wedding dress. It really started from there.

How do you work with each individual bride to create bespoke designs that fit their personal style and vision?

I meet with the client and we start by discussing their ideas, both for their dress and their wedding. That gives me an idea of the type of dress and style of the day. I always ensure that they have tried on other wedding dresses to have a clear idea of their vision. It’s sometimes quite a shock trying on a wedding dress for the first time!

We will then talk through fabrics and embellishment to really get a strong idea of the dress. I find brides love doing this and are really very creative!

What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of your job?

To be asked to make a dress for a bride is unique and special. Being part of their day is an amazing honour.

Your Instagram is filled with gorgeous snaps of your designs and beautiful wedding shoots. Do you find social media an important tool as a small independent business?

Massively! I have recently launched my website, and I still see myself as a social media newbie on Pinterest and Instagram. I really try to be honest and true with my Instagram feed to showcase both my work and other creatives in this amazing industry. It’s really fantastic how you can both network and meet clients through these channels.

What do you see in the future of Lisa Lyons Bridal?

I would love to launch a small non-bespoke bridal range, and also continue to help brides create their own beautiful bespoke wedding dresses.
