Spotlight on British brands: Mina and the Moon

Tiny clothes for big personalities

Childrenswear can often be a sea of uninspiring pinks and blues that leaves little room for individuality. To tackle this (one brightly-coloured babygrow at a time), there’s a new wave of unisex kidswear brands in town.

A growing collection of independent makers and designers are creating handmade kidswear – with unique patterns and bold colours that defy gender stereotypes.

To find out more about the importance of creating unique clothes for growing personalities, we caught up with Lucy, designer and owner of kidswear brand Mina and the Moon.

Where did the name Mina and the Moon come from?

My twins, Stan and Bea, used to call our baby Mina ‘Mina Moon’ when she was born. I had no idea why, but I liked it so decided to use it as the name for my business.

“I developed a love for dressing them individually and boldly, and using the sewing skills taught to me when I was a girl, I started to make the clothes that I had been searching for.

What inspired you to start designing and making childrenswear?
I was really unimpressed with the selection of unisex babywear available when the twins were little – so I decided to start making unisex leggings and print tees for them.

“I found it hard to find exciting bright unique unisex clothing to go with their growing outgoing characters.”

What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m a full-time mum so I do the preschool drop-offs and pickups for the three-year-old twins. Then I go to playgroup or see other mums with Mina. I print while Mina naps after lunch, and then again when all three of them are in bed later.

What motivated you to challenge ‘traditional’ childrenswear colour palettes?

I can’t bear pink and blue kids clothes. I love childrenswear to look bold and unique – just like children are.
