About Printed Iron on Name Labels

Nametape Application Instructions

What are iron on name labels?

Iron-on name labels - also called name tapes, clothing labels or name tags - are pre-printed labels that identify clothing and belongings quickly and clearly. They're applied with a household iron rather than sewn, and are used on school uniforms, PE kits, coats, jumpers, cardigans, lunch bags and nursery clothing to stop items being lost or mixed up.

Why parents choose them

With a class full of near-identical uniforms and PE kits, named clothing is the simplest way to cut down lost property and make sure the right jumper comes home. They go on faster than sew-in name tapes and survive the daily wash-and-wear cycle of school life.

Name labels for care homes and assisted living

Clearly named clothing matters just as much in residential care, where laundry is washed communally and garments are easily mixed up. Iron-on labels give care homes and families a fast, dignified way to keep residents' clothing identified through repeated industrial-style washing - no sewing, no marker pens. For larger or recurring care-home orders, request a bulk quote.

Colours, fonts and personalisation

Personalise every label in the online builder with your choice of colour and font, including clean school-style handwriting fonts ideal for younger children and bold block styles chosen for clarity on fabric. Add the name, preview it, and order in minutes.

Built to last

Printed to order in Britain using DTF transfers printed with vibrant pigment-based water-based inks, our labels are made to withstand repeated washing and daily use without fading, peeling or cracking - a long-lasting, cost-effective alternative to sew-in tapes or marker pens.

How to Apply Iron-On Name Labels

Quick version: cut out a label, cover with the thermal paper, press with a hot dry iron, let it cool, peel the film, press once more. About a minute per garment.

Step by step

  1. Cut one name label from the sheet.
  2. Set a domestic iron to the cotton setting, hot and dry - no steam. Pre-press the area for 2 - 5 seconds so it's flat.
  3. Position the label, then cover it with the supplied thermal paper.
  4. Press firmly over the thermal paper for 20 - 30 seconds.
  5. Remove the thermal paper and let the label cool for 30 - 60 seconds, until cool to the touch.
  6. Holding the garment steady, peel away the clear carrier film.
  7. Place the thermal paper back over the label and press again for 10 - 15 seconds.
  8. Remove the paper and let it cool fully before wearing or washing.

For a strong, lasting bond, always iron through the supplied thermal paper or baking parchment rather than directly onto the label and keep the steam off.

Because a household iron heats less evenly than a press, the cotton setting is usually what's needed for a firm hold - if a label lifts at the edges it simply wasn't hot enough, so re-cover it and press again with a little more heat. On delicate or heat-sensitive synthetics, test on a hidden area first and start a notch lower, increasing only if you need to.
