Sustainable fashion blog series: AURIA

By: Luke

Dashes Graphic

In recent years, we’ve seen the fashion industry shift its focus from cheap, fast manufacturing to eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production. Fashion is officially becoming more environmentally friendly.

In this blog post, we’re celebrating a designer who’s turned their attention to saving our seas with stylish swimwear made from plastic waste. Yes, really.

Introducing AURIA

AURIA is the brainchild of founder Diana Auria and her flatmate, graphic designer Margot Bowman. After coming together in 2013, AURIA has become an instant hit with the fashion industry.

The stunning graduate collection was debuted at the Estethica exhibition of London Fashion Week SS15. AURIA then went on to be chosen as one of Selfridges’ ‘Bright New Things’, showcased in the Oxford Street store.

Making sustainable sexy

The word ‘sustainable’ is often associated with dull colours and scratchy textures. Yet AURIA’s swimwear is the polar opposite: colourful, playful and modern.
Every product is made from 100% recycled material – meaning you can save the sea while swimming in it. The sustainable fibre is ECONYL®, a nylon yarn made from discarded products such as fishing nets, old carpets and plastic waste.

The regenerated nylon is also regenerable, meaning it can be infinitely used and reworked.

So not only is AURIA using waste products to create striking swimwear, but also ensuring never to create any waste from the products.

‘In today’s world we have many choices. As a designer – choices to be sustainably conscious about what you make; from sourcing materials to paying close attention to every step of your supply chain.’ Diana Auria

Changing the industry

AURIA’s innovative designs haven’t gone unnoticed. In recent years, the brand has teamed up with SONY – and Rihanna donned an AURIA bikini on a recent holiday.

AURIA has been making waves – and that isn’t stopping anytime soon. With the unapologetically bold and colourful SS17 collection out now, we can’t wait to see what exciting new projects are in the pipeline for this innovative brand.
